The Baylor Bears were notified Monday that they were the #1 team in college basketball according to the AP Poll. It was the first time in school history for the program and it was promptly dethroned by West Virginia on Tuesday night. The 10th ranked Mountaineers absolutely walloped the top-ranked Bears 89-68 in Morgantown. Bob Huggins is well known for his pressure defense causing havoc and chaos for opposing teams and his squad did just that on Tuesday. West Virginia forced 29 Baylor turnovers on their way to the blow-out win. Nathan Adrian led the way in scoring for WVU with 22 points.

Okay, tough loss to a really good team in a very difficult environment to play. Not the end of the world. It is quite disappointing if you are a Baylor fan because the team plays so well (they were one of the final 2 undefeateds in college basketball) only to reach the summit and immediately get crushed. I never thought Baylor was really the top team in the country — I still think that Duke is the most talented and Villanova is the most battle-tested team that knows how to win the big games. Don’t get me wrong, the Bears have a great squad, absolutely a top 10 team, possibly even top 5 when they play well. But what this game proves is just how difficult the Big 12 is going to be this year. Baylor, Kansas and West Virginia are obviously the premier teams in the conference but do not sleep on Kansas State, Iowa State or even TCU who have put up some great games against the aforementioned teams. Down years from Oklahoma and Texas could keep the league from reaching its full potential, but there will not be many easy games in this conference. As for Baylor, yeah it sucks that you lost in your first game as #1, but you’ve got a ton more games to go and have a big test on the road at K-State this weekend.
