For any fan of U.S. soccer that world has basically ended tonight. For the first time since 1986 the United States will not participate in the World Cup. Heading in to tonight the USMNT was in 3rd place in the CONCACAF Hex with an automatic spot in the 2018 World Cup, by the end of the night they sit in 5th place. This qualification cycle for the U.S . was one full of embarrassment, let downs, and excuses. The United States went through two managers and never found their rhythm. In a time that soccer in America is on the up, this is its darkest hour, its biggest blow. While I’d like to think this is a kick back to the old days of America boycotting Soviet held events this is a sad reality that we must face, the United States will not be making the trip to Russia this summer. Star teenager Christian Pulisic will not be given his international stage. The experienced stars like Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, and Michael Bradley will not be given an honorable send off, a chance at the final hoorah, instead they will go out in shame. Its hard to believe that a team that could bring us so much joy and jubilation four years ago would bring devastation and disbelief to us four years later. The 2022 qualification cycle is come in a blink, this snafu will better equip the United States for 2022 as younger player develop. However, in the mean time we sit back and ask ourselves “what just happened?”
