Mickelson Ties Record With 63

Phil opened his Open Championship weekend up with a near record 62 as his final putt at 18 rimmed out. First, let me say that I am not at all a Phil Mickelson fan (despite being a lefty), he is a smug bastard who thinks way too highly of himself for being a golfer who was caught for insider trading…That being said, watching him miss that last putt was pure gold. The guy got cocky before the putt went down and went into celebration mode, only to be stunned as the ball took a right turn, just missing the hole and sucker punching Phil in the gut. Phenomenal TV moment.

To his credit, Phil was very candid and actually somewhat funny in his post-round presser. He claimed that there is a “curse” and that no golfer will ever shoot a 62 in a major tournament, ya know because if he can’t then no one can. Phil was asked if he believed in the “Golf Gods” and Phil said he does now! *pause for laughter* He said that his putt was dead center and he go that rush when you know a putt is going in (I have no clue what he is talking about because I’m a horrendous putter) and at the last minute the ball made a right turn. Good for him, blaming the fake “Golf Gods” for keeping him from history, well Phil, just to let you know, that’s what we wannabe-writers and faux-journalists call a bad read, not a curse. Regardless, he played one hell of a round and has a 3 stroke lead over Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer (who has had a fantastic year) going into Friday.

People forget: Gordon Bombay only coached the Ducks because it was a court order.
