Fan favorite, and my personal favorite, Niklas Hjalmarsson has been traded to Arizona for Connor Murphy and Laurent Dauphin. Immediate reaction, I hate this move. Emotions and fandom aside, this trade doesn’t make much sense to me, I might be wrong and only time will tell, but right off the bat, not a fan. The Hawks save approximately $250k in salary cap and they lose their best shot blocker and arguably best true defenseman on the team. Murphy has a solid game, not as polished defensively, but brings a much bigger offensive punch. Dauphin is a bit of a mystery, he posted 28 points in 38 AHL games last season. He is only 22 and has some room to grow with some of the most talented offensive players in the league.

This, to me, doesn’t seem like enough value for a player of Niklas Hjalmarsson’s caliber. He can and should demand much more. The wheels are turning in my head and I believe that Stan has some more irons in the fire. I always say it, but I am in no position to second-guess Stan Bowman, the man has 3 cups in 7 years and was a bad bounce away from 4. He has a plan and a method to his madness. This is just the start, of what is sure to be a wild NHL Draft weekend.
