As I mentioned yesterday, there were changes coming to the USMNT roster and the 6 were announced a short while ago. There were strong rumors that Dempsey was going to be added to the roster, while Michael Bradley and Tim Howard ruined the surprise as they were in attendance for last night’s 3-0 win.
I’m not surprised at the additions, we knew that Bruce was going to load up the roster and try and win the tournament, but the decisions on who to drop, especially up top were confusing. I thought Dom Dwyer and Kelyn Rowe played very well over the past couple weeks and certainly deserved a shot to stay with the squad in the quarterfinals and (hopefully) beyond. Guys like Zardes, Agudelo, and Pontus had provided much less than the aforementioned Dwyer and Rowe, but my guess is that there was some mix of fatigue/injury, or the playing styles of the additions (Dempsey and Jozy) were too similar to that of Rowe and Dwyer.
It’s a head-scratcher of a move from Arena, but he has done well with what he has had thus far in the tournament. I think that the squad as a whole has missed a hell of a lot of opportunities during group play and no specific unit really performed to their abilities. I think the best group over the past three matches was the forwards, but man oh man did they miss some golden opportunities as they had chances to beat Panama and blow out Nicaragua.
The Americans’ next opponent will be decided tonight following the conclusion of the Mexico-Curacao match, they will take on the 3rd place finisher from Group C.
