There are some WILD minor league team names out there folks, so without further adieu, here are my Top 10 Best Minor League Baseball Team Names:

10. Batavia Muckdogs

The Batavia Muckdogs are a Single-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins based in Batavia, NY. Batavia has a population of around 16,000, making it one of the smallest cities in the country to have a professional baseball team. Like a lot of minor league clubs, they became the Muckdogs in 1998 after being picked by a fan poll.

9. Lehigh Valley IronPigs

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs are a Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Unlike the Muckdogs, the IronPigs are historically named after pig iron, used to manufacture steel, which the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania is famous for.

8. Hartford Yard Goats

The Hartford Yard Goats are a Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies based in Hartford, Connecticut. Previously the New Britain Rock Cats, the Yard Goats is another name that was picked by a fan vote after the team relocated to Hartford in 2016.

7. Binghamton Rumble Ponies

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies are a Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets based in Binghamton, New York. They were named after, you guessed it, a fan poll was made after the club decided to rebrand this year.

(Haven’t played again yet so couldn’t find a pic of their jerseys.)

6. Montgomery Biscuits

The Montgomery Biscuits are a Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays based in Montgomery, Alabama, and who would’ve thought they were named after a fan poll when the team moved from Orlando to Montgomery.

5. Lansing Lugnuts

The Lansing Lugnuts are a Single-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays based in Lansing, Michigan. Being based in Lansing, Michigan, the club has played an exhibition game against Michigan State for the past 10 seasons, drawing as large of a crowd as you can get for a baseball game in Lansing, Michigan.

4. Akron Rubber Ducks

The Akron Rubber Ducks are a Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians based in Akron, Ohio. One of the few teams on this list named not from a fan contest, instead for Akron being famous for their tire and rubber companies like Goodyear, Firestone, Goodrich, and General Tire.

3. Albuquerque Isotopes

The Albuquerque Isotopes are a Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Once again named after a fan vote, the name is derived from the Springfield Isotopes from The Simpsons. There is even an episode of The Simpsons where Homer tries to stop the teams plans to move to Albuquerque. Last year, the team had a “Better Call Saul” night after the Breaking Bad spin-off that is based in New Mexico.

2. Everett AquaSox

The Everett AquaSox are a Single-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners based in Everett, Washington. Don’t have any real information on them, only questions, namely what is an Aqua sock?

And the winner is (drumroll please)…..

1. New Orleans Baby Cakes

What a name, What. A. Name. The Baby Cakes are a Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins based in N’awlins, Louisiana. Their recent name change from the Zephyrs to the Baby Cakes of all names, once again after a fan vote, was meant with mixed feelings, with some people saying that “Baby Cakes” is not a suitable name for a baseball club. I might agree if this was the name of an NFL or a Canadian hockey team, but almost anything goes naming a baseball team, especially a minor league club, so I have a feeling the Baby Cakes is a name thats gonna stick for a long time.
