Bears’ Marcus Cooper Fumbles On Blocked FG Return2 min read

Absolute mayhem at Soldier Field. Marcus Cooper had an easy TD to put the Bears up 21-7 at the half. In typical Chicago Bears’ fashion, Cooper slows up just shy of the end zone and is stripped. The ball was then batted out of the back of the end zone, which after the review it was ruled the Bears would get an untimed down at the 1/2 yard line. Of course, they picked up a false start penalty and after all that, settled for a field goal.
Okay. There was a lot to take in there. Obviously, we’ve got to start with Marcus Cooper, this could easily be the WORST play in the history of the NFL. Hyperbole, maybe, but this is a truly stupid play that will be shown for years and years. I’d put today’s play up there with the notorious butt fumble, but this is about as boneheaded as it gets. Just get in the damn end zone, how many times have we’ve seen this happen? Too many.
The stupidity of Cooper is going to take our attention away from the fact that the Bears took a FALSE START PENALTY. The Jets might be the only team in the NFL that could screw this scenario up more than the Bears. This should have been 7 on the return, then should have been 7 on the untimed down and now it’s just 3. I don’t think I’ve ever felt worse about a 10 point lead, nor do I think there has ever been a team up 10 points get booed off the field like that.
UPDATE: Marcus Cooper just dropped a for sure pick. Unless he comes up with a pick six later in the game to cover his ass, this will be the worst gaffe in the NFL this season. When will players learn to finish a play and run all the way into the end zone? Anyone who has ever played football has had coaches scream at them to play through the whistle hundreds of times. If I’m a player with nothing but green in front of me I’m running into the tunnel before stopping just to avoid making an absolute IDIOT out of myself.
If the Bears don’t hold on to this lead and end up losing, Marcus Cooper should be cut.
