Bubble Games to Watch: February 20
We had a busy Tuesday with a bunch of bubble teams in action, VCU helped their case while Davidson, Indiana, Nebraska, Clemson, and Alabama all hurting their chances with a loss. We’ve got 6 more games tonight to take a look at and a bunch of them are in the Big East, a conference that has cannibalized itself this year.
Florida at 13 LSU 6pm CT ESPN 2
The Gators have had a rocky year but find themselves on the bubble following a nice little run. This is a massive opportunity at a very good LSU team. The Tigers are currently tied for 1st in the SEC and have a win over Kentucky. LSU has a date this weekend with Tennessee and might be in a look ahead spot, ideal for the Gators.
Xavier at Seton Hall 6pm CT CBSSN
Xavier has really struggled this year and Seton Hall has been very up and down. The Pirates had a 7 game winning streak, followed that up by losing 6 of 8, and have now won 3 in a row. They’ve already beaten Xavier on the road and this win will help with confidence but can only hurt their resume.
Northwestern at Ohio State 7:30pm CT BTN
Ohio State has hit a small skid losing at Michigan State and at home against Illinois. Regardless of how the Illini have been playing lately it is still not a good loss. Northwestern is a must-win/very winnable game for a team that expects to be in the NCAA Tournament. A loss would knock them into the danger zone.
St. John’s at Providence 7:30pm CT FS1
The Johnnies should be safely in the field following this weekend’s win over Villanova. So that makes the bubble team Providence. Hear me out. This team lost their best player early in the year and have been coming back from it. They have already beaten St. John’s and they have wins over Seton Hall, Texas, and a halfway decent South Carolina team. If this team can find a late season run and win a couple games at MSG, they have a shot at the tourney.
Butler at 11 Marquette 8pm CT CBSSN
LaVall Jordan’s team is squarely on the bubble. Most publications have them as a “Last Four In” or “First Four Out” team. Marquette is as good as it gets in terms of quality wins in the Big East, especially on the road. If the Bulldogs can contain Markus Howard (big if), they will have a chance to win this game. Kamar Baldwin needs to step up and make plays.
Creighton at DePaul 8pm CT
This is Creighton’s final chance to make the tournament, they’ve let countless opportunities go to waste by blowing leads in the final tv timeout. The reason I am including this team is because I believe they have a run in them. They’ve been there in nearly every game and have had a tough time closing out. If, again big if, they can go on a run, they can be a tournament team.
