Bubble Games to Watch: March 5

We saw the start of the Atlantic Sun Tournament last night as well as Virginia dropped in a tie for the most 3s in a game with 18 at Syracuse, Texas struggled at Texas Tech and TCU got smoked at home by K State. The bubble is a mess and can get even messier after tonight’s games. We also have the Patriot League, the Big South, and the Horizon League getting their tournaments underway as well.

Xavier at Butler 5pm CT FS1

Xavier has quickly played their way onto the bubble and Butler, a team that has had many chances, has played themselves off the bubble. It isn’t necessarily over yet but the Bulldogs would need a lot to happen. Xavier is one of the hottest bubble teams around winning their last 5 and look poised to get back to the Big Dance.

Western Michigan at Toledo 6pm ESPN+

The Rockets remain firmly in my First Four Out group and it is by virtue of other teams grabbing better wins. They need to stay the course and keep winning and given the rate bubble teams are falling, they will have a good chance at stealing a bid.

VCU at George Mason 6:30pm CT

VCU is pretty safe right now, but it would be very much on brand for this season to see the Rams lose a game they should win easily. George Mason is just 16-13 this season and would really hurt VCU’s resume.

11 Purdue at Minnesota 7pm CT Big Ten Network

Another team that just needs a win is Minnesota. The Indiana blowout win from a couple weeks ago is starting to age well, but they could use one more big one. This is the game they need. Purdue heads to the Barn and the Gophers should be desperate for the win.

13 Kansas at Oklahoma 8pm CT ESPN 2

Everyone’s favorite 6-10 Big 12 team, Oklahoma hosts Kansas in a game similar to Minnesota’s. Both teams are in right now but just need that one extra win to get them over the hump. Otherwise the Sooners could very realistically finish the season 6-12 in conference play.

Auburn at Alabama 8pm ESPNU

Auburn is just outside the AP Top 25 right now and has really stabilized their season after the tumultuous run in January. They might not be competing for the SEC Title but they are still a good team. Alabama has not beat a team in the top half of the SEC in a month. That needs to change. They had a good chance with LSU at home and couldn’t get the job done.

People forget: Gordon Bombay only coached the Ducks because it was a court order.
