First Four Day 1 Recap
Day 1 of the NCAA Tournament has come and gone, for better or worse, yes, the First Four still counts as part of the Tournament. In game one we saw Prairie View and Fairleigh Dickinson play to get into the Round of 64 against Gonzaga. Game two saw Belmont a deserving, but surprising at-large recipient taking on Temple.
Game 1 was ugly to start and settled into a really fun game. The Panthers from Prairie View were lights out from 3-point range in the first half going 8-12 from beyond the arc and that helped them to a 7-point halftime lead.
But back came FDU. The Knights cut down on their turnover issue and Jahlil Jenkins turned it on. Not to mention FDU got a career game from Darnell Edge. It seemed though whenever Fairleigh Dickinson made a run, Prairie View had an answer, until late. And just when it seemed like FDU had it sewn up Gary Blackston did this.
The late 4-point play kept the Panthers alive, but FDU found the offense and got the ball inside and took home the win. It was their first NCAA Tournament win in program history and they will head off to Salt Lake City to play Gonzaga.
Game 2 recap to come following the game.
It was a game of runs in the first half with both teams scoring at will early on, especially at the rim. Temple hopped out to a lead but Belmont came roaring back on an 18-7 run of their own to close the half. Dylan Windler was held in check with just 3 points (he made up for it with 3 steals), but Kevin McClain had a big half with 13. Temple spread out the offense, but really needed a primary scorer.
Shizz Alston and the Owls got off to a hot start to open the 2nd half, but the lead was short lived as McClain continued to have a great game hitting this big three.
Temple simply went cold from the field and Belmont kept on scoring and getting offense from many different guys. Player of the Game will most likely go to McClain but Nick Muszynski deserves some shine. He was phenomenal and efficient down-low despite a bad ankle. Belmont gets their first ever NCAA Tournament win.
